Establishing an AI-enabled SDLC
Many engineers already use AI assistants. We help you agree the policy, put quality gates on AI-assisted changes and keep a record your auditors can follow.
An AI-enabled SDLC is a software delivery process where the use of AI assistants and agents is governed by policy, checked by quality gates and recorded for audit.
Comonad helps large engineering organisations set up how they build software with AI, safely: one policy, gates in every team's pipeline and a record your auditors can follow, whichever coding assistants your teams use.

What is an AI-enabled SDLC?
In practice the difference is where the rules live. Without one, each team decides how far to trust an assistant. With one, the rules are agreed once, applied by the same gates in every pipeline, and recorded alongside the change records you already keep, from specification through review, testing and release.
What an engagement covers
Current state
How your teams specify, review, test and release today, where AI is already in use, and what would need to change. Output: a written current-state review.
Policy for AI-assisted development
Which assistants and models may be used, on which code and data, with what review, and what must never leave your environment. Output: a written policy your security and legal teams can review.
Quality gates
A person agrees the specification before anything is generated; generated changes are reviewed to the same standard as any other change; tests and evaluations must pass before merge; release checks apply however a change was written. Output: the gate definitions and where each runs.
Evidence and audit
Which changes were AI-assisted and which checks ran on them. Output: the records each gate produces, and who reviews them.
Rollout and training
Start with a small group of pilot teams, review what the gates caught, adjust, then extend team by team, with guidance for the engineers and reviewers involved. Output: a rollout plan with owners and review points.
Working with governance
Where your organisation already governs AI, the SDLC policy maps to the same control set, so engineering and risk work from one set of rules.
What you keep
Development policy
Which assistants and models may be used, on which code and data.
Quality gate definitions
The gates from specification to release, and where each one runs.
Change record
Which changes were AI-assisted, and which tests and reviews ran.
Rollout plan
Pilot teams first, then team by team, with owners and review points.
How an engagement runs
Diagnose
The current-state review, with your heads of engineering, platform and security.
Design
The policy, the gate definitions and the records each gate produces.
Embed
The gates running in the pipelines of the pilot teams, then extended.
Hand over
Your platform team runs the gates; engineering leadership owns the policy.
What we do not do
- We do not give legal advice on the ownership of AI-generated code or on licence and IP risk; those questions go to your counsel.
- We do not choose or resell a coding assistant: that choice stays with you.
Who it is for
- CTOs and engineering leaders introducing AI across many teams who need quality gates and evidence on generated work.
- Platform and developer-experience leads who will run the gates in CI/CD.
- Security, risk and audit teams who need to know which changes were AI-assisted and how they were checked.

Questions about an AI-enabled SDLC
What is an AI-enabled SDLC?
An AI-enabled software development lifecycle uses AI across specification, code generation, review, testing, CI/CD and release. A quality gate checks the generated work before it moves on, and the change record says which changes were AI-assisted. The assistant itself is your choice.
How do we let engineers use AI coding assistants safely?
Agree a policy first: which assistants and models may be used, on which code and data, and what must never leave your environment. Then put gates in the pipeline so that generated work meets the same review, test and release standard as any other change, and record which changes were AI-assisted.
What changes in code review and CI/CD?
Less than many teams expect. Most of review and CI/CD stays as it is; two things are added. A person agrees the specification before anything is generated, and each AI-assisted change is recorded as such. The full gate list is under "Quality gates" above.
Who owns AI-generated code, and what is the IP risk?
That is a legal question, and the answer depends on your contracts, your assistant's terms and the jurisdiction. We do not give legal advice. We help you set the policy and records your counsel needs to answer it: which assistants are used, on what code, under which terms.
How do we evidence AI-assisted changes to auditors?
Each gate produces a record: who agreed the specification, who reviewed the change, which tests and evaluations ran, and whether the change was AI-assisted. Those records sit with your existing change records, so audit and incident review work as before.
How do you roll it out across many teams?
In waves. The rules are the same for every team from the start; what changes between waves is the guidance and the gate settings, adjusted from what the pilot teams showed, including where the gates slowed work down.
How do we know it is working?
We agree the measures with you at the design stage: for example, what the gates catch, how often generated changes are sent back at review, and whether incident review can trace an AI-assisted change. We do not promise figures in advance; the measures show what is happening in your organisation.
